The Little Women Musical Concert

I was invited to The Little Women Musical workshop concert on March 6th at the Knitting Factory in North Hollywood and here are my thoughts:

“…For love casts out fear, and gratitude can conquer pride. “ Louisa May Alcott, Little Women

Louisa May Alcott published the now quintessential novel, Little Women in 1868. The tale of Josephine March and her families adventures into adulthood during the civil war era remains to capture audiences even 155 years later. The four March sisters remind us of the adolescent struggle between familial duties and personal growth. To take on Little Women is to take on beloved characters that we have truly grown up with and with this new re-imagining, produced by 4 Times Entertainment, it hopes to explore these themes and beloved characters a bit deeper.

This concert was overflowing with talent.  A score by Dan Redfeld filled the room with exuberant melodies and enthralling lyrics that take you away to this  exemplary world. The mellifluous piano, at times joined with strings, enchanted the captivated audience. Jenna Lea Rosen, who has voiced many characters on Disney animated shows and was most recently in La Mirada’s production of Grease as Sandy, was exquisite as Jo. Chris Mann, whom you know from NBC’s The Voice was Dr. Bhaer. His vocals were so light and beautifully sung, he made for a perfect Professor. Terron Brooks performed as Laurie and I loved his performance so much. He really gave Laurie some depth. Kim Huber, once a mother playing Mrs. Potts in Broadway’s Beauty and the Beast, she was the most perfect Marmie and had me crying (of course!)

Because this was a concert preview or workshop, not all of the songs and dialogue for the show were included. I loved everything that I heard but I felt it was missing a song to show the silliness and camaraderie with the sisters. When I enquired about this the response was that they have a bigger song that showcases just that but they decided to not include it with this concert. I hope they share more at the New York preview happening on April 24th at 54 Below. The music has the warmth that you expect while attaining the heart of what Louisa May Alcott wrote. The lyrics emphasize that in this world there is room for you to be yourself, and to shine. I left wanting to see and hear more and I’m so thrilled for anyone who lives near New York because this upcoming concert is going to be spectacular.
